Intake Gasket ?'s

The intake gasket has been leaking coolant externally in the front for years on my 79 F150 with 302 but nothin getting in the oil. I replaced the intake gasket last week and all seemed to be fine. Kept a check on the oil and there was no coolant in oil.

Truck has been setting about 3-4 days now. Checked oil today and there is coolant in oil and coolant standing in the timing cover area. What could have went wrong?
I did drive the truck right after I changed the intake gasket, did that keep it from sealing properly? Weird though that I drove it for 3 days and kept a check on oil and there were no problems or leaks. Thanks.

Did you pressure test the cooling system after you installed the new gaskets? You can buy or rent one of those testers that install in place of the radiator cap and try to pump up to about 15 psig. Since you may have a leak, you may never get there, but you may hear the air hissing out, and help locate the source.

In lieu of one of those testers, I made one of my own using a garden hose cap and the Schrader (or Presta) valve from a bicycle inner tube, and one of those Prestone cooling system flush kits. Install the T fitting from the kit into the heater hose; it leaves a garden hose fitting you normally close up with a supplied cap. I drilled a hole into a garden hose cap (not the one from the kit; you that to seal the T fitting) and install the Schrader or Presta valve into it. Install the modified cap onto the T fitting, and pump it up to about 15 psig with a bicycle pump, with the radiator cap installed. The cap should release around its rated pressure, again, unless there was a leak elsewhere. This little device tests the radiator cap as well.
