After all the work on my truck I've realized that the air cleaner is too big for the carb - a 2150. The cleaner is a stock Ford aluminum unit, but it appears to be for a 5 1/2" carb, while the 2150 takes a 5 1/8" cleaner.
The air cleaner might measure 5 1/4" inside, but I'm measuring to the center of the rolled flange. When I put it on the flange fits nicely in the channel at the front of the carb, the area between the bowl and the throat. But, that means all of the excess is at the rear and there's a gap between the carb's air horn and the cleaner.
I tried another Ford cleaner and got the same results. So, it appears that this carb, which isn't the original one by any stretch, is the problem. However, it measures 5 1/8" to the center of its flange, and that seems to be a standard on air cleaners - at least those I've looked at on line.
I haven't tried one of those 5 1/8" cleaners as I don't have on available, but if I used one I'd have the problem of the PCV hose.
