HI everyone. I drive a 1989 F-150 4x4 XLT Lariat 302, AOD 3.55's.
I am not sure if this is normal or not but i feel the truck has very litlle power. I run 60 on the highway and when I come to a good size missouri hil I lose about 7 mph on the hill. I also hate passing cars in this truck even at 35-40 it takes forever to get up to a good speed.
I am not swapping motors and I know everyone thinks the 302 sucks all around but I want this truck to do what it can not pull a 16X80 mobile home.
Yes that's about normal for this vintage truck, it's smotherd beyond all reason with a whisper quiet exhaust and a puny cam. I have a full exhaust system and a cam in an otherwise stock 5.0 with the same trans and gearing and while it still won't be confused with a Powerstroke it certainly makes a lot more power than stock.. passing cars at 50 within a hundred feet or so.
I would start with a good FULL tune up. spark plugs (no fancy ones), cap, rotor, plug wires, and air filter at the minimum. Maybe run some Seafoam through the intake, and in the gas as per the bottle (google it). This would get you started in the right direction at least.
Already did the tune up I haven't seafoamed it yet. I will try that. I advanced timing from 11 to 14. I have tried re-gapping the plugs about 20% over stock recommendation. I have not tried the six liter tune up trick of cutting the plug.
I have one magnaflow high flow cat. into 3 inch pipe in to a single three inch glass pack and three inch all the way to the stock exit area.
