Question about relays

My understanding of relays are that power closes the relay to send power through the secondary circuit of the relay and when power is cut the secondary circuit goes dead. Is this correct?

Reason I ask is cause I am trying to resolve my cornering light system on my 78 which most of the wiring is missing and I desided to go alittle custom by using 4 relays instead of the OEM 2 to allow the cornering lights to only work at night time.

Problem is though if my understanding is correct I wont be able to get a steady corner light since the voltage from the turn signal switch is after the flasher relay and it will be pulsing. I am thinking this pulsing will be turning the cornering lights on and off the same.

Now I dont know if there are relays that work different but I know the factory relays kept the lights on steady but their hard to find new.

Your basic explanation of realy operation is correct. If you energize the coil the realy is pulled in closing the circuit allowing power to flow through the contacts. But this is very basic, and there are may variations on relays and circuits for the desired operation needed. Check some links on this site, and maybe look at some "how to" sites for what you want to do.

So there are relays out there that reguardless if the source wire has pulsing voltage such as from a turn signal input the relay will stay in the steady on position?

That is what I was wondering about if there were different relays or what cause the oem factory 3 prong relay had the corner lights steay on. But I was wanting to replace the missing wiring with aftermarket but then install inline in each left/right circuit a secondary relay that is cross linked for activation by the headlight switch so the current wont flow to the cornering lights unless the headlight switch is pulled out to the parking lights or headlights.

I am looking at relays but most of what I am finding though is these generic ones for driving lights I will need to spend time to search online since local auto houses dont carry much in the electrical department
