OK - I've read over and over again how easy replacing the alternator is supposed to be.... but I must have the STRONGEST tensioner in existence. I've been working for mare than an hour trying to get the belt back on the alternator... somebody please tell me some kind of trick to get this done.
I've tried brute force... not happening.
I've tried just about every possible angle of leverage... nope.
I've gotten a 1/2 drive in the tension release and still can get it on.
I'll try just about anything at this point...
Oh, BTW - I hope that little extra lip of shroud is not super important... cuz it broke off.
Sounds like you may have a seized belt tensioner - mine was seized solid and had to be replaced.
With a 1/2 inch drive you should be able to move the tensioner against its spring, enough to get the retaining clip on top to hold the tension while you slip the belt on.
OK - finally got it on... the wife showed up and the xtra pair of hand is what I needed. I love it when she gets all dirty and greasy with me
Anyhow - the problem was what I couldn't see. While I was releasing the tensioner, the belt came off the bottom pulley and was ****-eyed - this took up the fraction that I needed to get the belt on the alternator.
Lesson learned... ideally, there should be 2 people to do this job.
