I'm looking for a column shifter for my L6 300ci 4.9L, don't want to pay $800 like the junk yard wants, anyone know where i can find one for $300 or less?? I'll buy online or around Medford, OR
You wanna fill out the rest of your profile for me? Please select your user cp near the left of your screen and then fill out your ride, and location so we can see where your at. I know of a few places near medford but for a good swap itll be at least 500-600.
I already have the 3 speed tranny and the column shifter only works for 2nd and 3rd so i'm getting a floor mount so I can use all gears instead of having to put the truck in reverse then having to hop out and put it in neutral and using just 2nd/3rd to go... and thanks for the input, I'll check out that thread
I still have a hard time understanding why ford left the column shifter in use for so long. They have always been prone to having the shift tube or collar break, and replacing either was a time consuming task, when the parts were available.....
I remember installing a hurst indy floor shifter in my first 4 wheeler, a 70 F100. It wasn't for looks or anything like that, it was also to regain use of all 4 gears.
Why couldn't they have made a floor shifter as a factory installed item? They eventually did this in cars that were spec'd with the 3 spd manual, so why not the trucks?
The 3-speed with column shift was the "standard transmission". It was standard equipment on all models. To get a 4 speed or another transmission, you had to order it that way.
It was standard equipment untill 1988. The interesting thing is most of these trucks have a optional transmission, as the 3-speed wasn't very comon at all. That would make the optional transmissions the most ordered option there was.
So if I was to guess why they didn't opt for a floor shifter... Incentive to order a better tranny for a little more $$$. That and the 3-speed was also avaliable on the Econoline. The dog house would be in the way.
Yeah, I know the 3 speed was the base transmission. What I was saying, is why didn't they change over to a floor shift in trucks, like they did in cars. Granted, the 3 speed wasn't very common in cars after around 1970 or so, but the newest car I can recall having a column shift 3 speed was a 1967 Galaxie 500 with 289/3speed. Most other cars newer than about 1964 had a floor shift, even with the base 3 speed manual. Galaxie and Falcon were the last holdout's, yet the Mustang and Maverick were always floor shift even with the base I6/3speed manual.
That's 20 years difference between the column shifter being discontinued in cars, and living on till the very end in pickups/vans. The very basic utility vehicle used in everyday work, and most needed to be reliable.......
I got my floor shifter installed about 2 weeks ago and it's working great, i need to adjust the 1st/R a little, it's not going all the way in gear for 1st. I also need to make sure everything is tightened down, I have a small leak on my tranny somewhere, this is the first time I've owned a 3 speed and when I bought it the column shift didn't work for 1st/R.
