Few PSD questions

First off, I am used to my 91 7.3 IDI so on that note.
I just purchased a 01 E350 Superduty 14' cube van. 160K
I have a few questions.
1. Do i have a 4R100 or E4OD?
2. Cold starting, doesn't like to start easy. I plug it in all night. I wait about 10 seconds past the wait to start light. If I crank forever, nothing happens at all. But if I crank for about 3 seconds the van quick pops off but you can hear/feel the starter do a sudden stop and then keeps going. If it don't pop off, you see a puff of smoke come from the airfilter. I shut the key off for 10 seconds the turn the key forward for up to 10 seconds past the wait to start light and it always pops but if it don't start, i gotta keep doing this process until it starts. Even after a few hours, its the same thing.
3. Glowplugs. unlike my IDI, when i turn on the key and wait for the wait to start light. nothing clicks like the IDI does. I am assuming thats modern technology?
4. I know its a van and the engine is next to my legs but everything seems good. But when listening to the turbo spool up off of idle. It sounds a bit "choppy" but i can't feel anything. But once again the thing is right next to me unlike a truck. is this normal?
5. I put in a new battery but was unaware that there was a battery hidden under the box in the frame. I don't get much cranking time before things go down. I am hoping its just the old battery fighting the new battery. If not I guess it could be a tired starter right?

the glow plug system doesnt click like the IDIs do. the turbo/exhaust sounds different on the PSD than the IDI. the choppy sound is normal.

you should always replace both batteries together because an old battery will draw the new one down.

if you are having cold start problems it could be the glow plug relay which in the pickups is in the valley of the engine behind the fuel filter. not sure on the vans if it's the same or not. glow plugs are under the valve covers.

not sure on the vans but the 4r100 came out in the pickups for the 99 model year.
