Something needs to be done fairly soon, the M16 platform has been in service longer than any service rifle in US military history, its great but nearing its limits.
“We can take out the target at $25 per XM round as opposed to a $20,000 to $50,000 JDAM.”
I don't see this going into production to replace the M-16/M4 platform.
At $25.00 per round, that would be ONE EXPENSIVE platform to issue to warfighters.
As a replacement for the $20-50K JDAM, absolutely, but not for the general issue weapon.
I'd like to see the 7.62x51mm version of the M-16 (SR-25) issued to the troops.

I agree, not for everyone. But I can see this weapon system being issued to two soldiers per squad as an extra "Ace in hole" weapon that could be called on when the squad leader/individual sees fit.
The M-16/M-4 is on it's way out for sure, whatever the replacement will be I am sure the MX25 is not it but I am sure it will be another NATO 5.56 round weapon. Just like MOgas will never be back on the battlefield. JP8 is now the universal fuel that will transfer to any NATO allied countries equipment like the NATO 5.56 round to any other NATO allied countries weapon.
7.62x51mm based weapon would be great........seems we had one once, the M-14!.....man, what a weapon!
In the real world, 5.56x45mm lets you bring more firepower into the fight, with less weight.
And as mentioned, we need to be interchangeable with our allies in ammo.
Even the Russians understand this as well, all AK-74 weapons are 5.44x39mm.....a trend that is hard to get away from.
Perhaps we should consider the Israeli route: The Galil assault rifle, combines the strengths of the M16 and AK families in one weapon.......Something of that nature?

I remember a show on one time talking about a weapon that was to replace the M16. It was light as the M16, used a slightly larger round and it was designed like the AK-47 that it could be submerged under water or sand and pulled right out and fired without cleaning.
Personally I am amazed that we used the 5.56 round for as long as we did. Its a great round but its more suited for a close quarters combat, as the same show was showing and proving the M16 with the smaller lighter 5.56 round just didnt have much punch or accuracy at longer distances that the AK-47 with its 7.62x39mm rounds did. I wouldnt mind seeing a 7.62 Nato or 7.62x51 round being used instead of the 5.56 round. Might cost more but not everyone would have to get the new 7.62 nato powered weapons, just give them to the units that will be fighting at longer distances than typical urban warfare where the M16 accells at.
