Dave,
There are two torque ratings 420 & 470 foot lbs. (ZF-5 42 & 47)
There are three bellhousings. Small block, 385 block and Diesel.
The diesels get a close ratio (taller first gear) than the big block.
Because they are rev limited and have more torque they aren't seen to need a 5.72 first, and only get 4.14.
Edit: Plus, of course the difference in tailhousings between 2wd and 4x4
To the OP. you either need a 4x4 trans from a diesel OR a trans from a 1988-97 diesel F-superduty(also reffered to as a F450 but it is not really)
There are actually more than tq differences between the zf5 s42and the zf5 s47
The s42 gear ratios(for a diesel)1987-95
1st Gear:
4.14
2nd Gear:
2.37
3rd Gear:
1.42
4th Gear:
1.00
5th Gear:
0.77
Rev Gear:
3.79
Looks like they wised up on that later zf. I love my zf, but I do not like it's reverse gear. It's too fast. Ok for unloaded normal backing up, but anything else means slipping the clutch or putting it in low range. I honestly don't know what a person does with this early transmission in a 2wd truck. Can you imagine trying to back up with a loaded trailer and not having low range from the transfer case?

My exact thoughts, that is why i am going nuts looking for a s47 for my powerstroke swap. that will be the trucks main use, trailer towing
