SIOUX FALLS — South Dakota's population has surpassed 800,000 for the first time, according to data released Tuesday by the U.S. Census Bureau.

The final count of 814,180 is a 7.9 percent increase from the 2000 Census. South Dakota is the fifth-smallest state in the United States by population, behind Wyoming, Vermont, North Dakota and Alaska. The state, which also was the fifth-smallest in the last census a decade ago, is also one of five states with the lowest population density.

Loving that low population density, life in one of the big square states is good! But, if it keeps growing, I might have to move to Wyoming.

Rob, funny thing is, I think there are more people in the Omaha metro area than the whole state of Wyoming!

I used to tease my family back in Pennsylvania when I lived in Montana... there were more people in their county than the entire state of Montana.

Good Morning SD!

Here is an excerpt from our local paper:

Montana's population this year for apportionment purposes jumped 10.2 percent to 994,416 people, according to the 2010 census, up from 902,195 people in the 2000 census.

Almost at a million, lol

I just heard Nebraska now has 1.8 million people. 90 % probably live in the eastern half of the state!

Wow Corey, I thought MT had hit a million already. Pretty darn close!

Hey Pat, and 89% of the 90% were in the Omaha Cabela's shoe department last Saturday!

I thought it had at well.

Here is another excerpt from the Tribune:

Failing to gain an extra seat in the House of Representatives means Montana retains its status as the largest population for a congressional district in the country, nearly 100,000 people more than Delaware, which has 900,877 people, according to the new census. The U.S. Census Bureau said Tuesday that the average member of the U.S. House represents about 710,767 people.

I still can't believe they haven't given MT another seat in the House of Reps... I feel sorry for poor Denny Rehberg having to run all over the state, that's a lot of miles to cover for one guy.

They oughtta start counting the cattle, that probably put the MT population at 4 million, lol.

They said we had to be north of 1 million before we received two again, which judging from the current growth could be around 2020, otherwise it will be 2030 at the earliest

If they did go by cattle, we would give Cali a run for their money (or lack thereof, lol)

The biggest problem is the people who won't fill out the ten year census!
