Question Tailpipe Rustproofing?

I just received a new tailpipe for my 78 Bronco. This is the 3rd one in the last 6 years. The Bronco only gets driven on weekends, and this causes the tailpipes to rust out.

Any suggestions on what to coat the pipe with, to extend it's life? It's about 4 ft long, so I could pour some paint inside and slosh it around a bit, to coat the inside......

Thanks for any ideas.

Tailpipe Rustproofing?

i used some high temp coating from the eastwood catalog on my mufflers. eastwood makes all kinds of cool auto restoration stuff. i think they will send you a free catalog if you can find their website. the stuff is in a spray paint can and would coat the outside of the pipe. dont know if anything would work with the inside, though. if you wanna go with stainless which will pretty much last forever jc whitney sells it. then take it to a good muffler guy to be bent. i've got stainless muffler clamps on my 86 mustang that are about 7 years old and still look like new. stainless steel is a lot more expensive at first to install, but it'll probably outlive you, as long as it doesnt get torn off.

Tailpipe Rustproofing?

Oldfordtrucksrule, thanks for the tip on stainless steel. I will use it on my next tailpipe, if/when this one rusts away. It's strange how only the tailpipe rusts, while the rest of the exhaust seems to be in good shape. I did replace the muffler with a Thrush turbo several years ago, and it and the pipes in front are still very solid.

I have an Eastwood catalog, and they do have a couple of rust-proofing paints. The trouble is, the paint costs about as much as I paid for the tailpipe. I have a left-over quart of acrylic enamel from my last paint job, that I'm going to slosh around on the inside of the pipe. Then I'll spray the outside with black Rustoleum or something similiar. Since the pipe's new without any rust, maybe this will help it last while I save up for a whole new stainless system......

i have thrush super turbos too. i like em. to tell you the truth i think they last as long as most other mufflers, despite being 20 bucks apeice. i wouldnt paint the inside of the tailpipe, that might stink real bad. rustoluem doesnt work good at all unless you prime the surface real good. if you paint over bare metal it will rust through pretty quick. i think the temps will kill normal paint quickly and probably stink bad. if your looking for a cheap way get some bbq or high temp paint from the parts store. its pretty cheap and will not burn off. just make sure you clean the pipe real good with alcohol or something like that to get rid of all the stuff on the pipe.

one more thing. it sounds like water is sittingin the tailpipe from how you described it rusting out quickly. maybe drill a hole in the lowest spot to let out the water

Ah ha! Barbeque paint! I have a can of that in the garage; I'll try it. And that's a good tip about the water drain hole, I'll try that too.

Thanks.

Stainless steel is the only way to go...

Paints and coatings will not stick to the inside of the pipe.

If you really want it to last I'd get a full stainless steel exhaust and send it off to Jet-hot coatings. They coat both inside and out. U'd have an exhaust that would outlast our sun!!

Tailpipe Rustproofing?

I have a 99 F250 7.3L which was delivered from the dealer in Apr of 98.
A friend of mine convinced me to use the barbarque black paint on the exhaust system. He's been doing this for years, since he trailers a boat and launches it in the ocean, (actually, he does the whole underneath of his truck...).

The barbarque black works great, but it'll require a fresh coat every year or so (takes around 1 hour on a creeper). You can get it in a quart can or the spraycan. I live in the northeast, lots of salt in the winter....no rust yet.

Stainless Steel is still better, but it costs more. You may experience some accelerated corrosion between the muffler & the tailpipe (if you only use a stainless tailpipe and have a carbon steel muffler). If you do decide to use stainless, might want to get a complete system.

good luck
Deano
