Okay so I continue to use just the dash switch and just keep the hubs in the auto position. How would I know if I have a vacuum leak and 4wd is not engaged. When my tires are spinning? When I loose complete control on a snow covered street thinking 4wd was working properly? Will a dash light alert me to the fact the 4wd is not engaging? Should I just put the hubs in locked position whne I anticipate needing 4wd. Tks everyone

You should be able to tell when your 4wd isnt working, if you really want to be safe sure just lock them

If you manually lock the hub the mechanism is positioned to the "locked" position so when the hub and axle shaft line up it pops in to place. The parts just have to mesh together. If the vaccum isn't there to do it the parts won't lock.
Exactly. Of course, if the vacuum system fails, it's also a backup to that, but the main reason of the manual lock hubs is to allow them to lock in situations where they wouldn't by themselves.
