Littlebuss ain't no one picking on you here. We just reminiscing about things we grew up with that just ain't here no more. Like my Grandson when he first saw a 33 an a 3rd Elves record. He asked if they used to make computer drives that big.
This reminded me of the first time I went in and asked the young parts guy for parts for my truck. It was like Who's on first.
He asked what transmission I had.
I told him "3 on the tree."
He said "3 on the what?"
So I restated "3 speed on the column."
He replied, "Oh so it's an Automatic!"
I told him, "No, its a manual!"
He looked at me like I had 3 heads, and said, "How can you have a manual transmission on the column?"
I asked him when he was born.
He replied "1989"
I told him that was 3 years after the last 3 on the tree I am aware of.
Fun times. We need to get more of these young kids looking at the classics.
Kid at the tire shop was putting new tires on my 55 Town Sedan. He put the floor jack under the rear axle and was about to tear up the fresh paint on the fender trying to get the tire off. I told him he had to use a bumper jack and lift the body to get the tire to clear the fender. He did not know what a bumper jack was and the shop did not have one. We used the one in my trunk.
How many vehicles (b'sides your slick) have you been in in the last 15 years with a window crank!?
That's easy there are 3 others in my collection which also includes a 1991 Mazda 626 and a 1998 Mercury Sable Wagon. Four out of eight so what are the other three. I'll concede the Hornet is out...
The mazda is old enough, the merc is rare, but not many windows crank after 2000 as a percentage of total production. Sealed beams headlights are fadin out too.
I have been laughing at this thread as well.
I needed a new brake light switch for my 66 after a phone call to the local salvo auto parts store with no luck I decided to visit them in person.
The conversation went like this.
Hi I need a brake light switch for a 66 f-250
What litre engine?
300 cid six.
No man what litre engine?
I think to myself 63 cubic inches per liter and say 4.7
Yo dude that engine is not in my computer.
at this point a nice " older man " came out and told the kid he needed to look it up in a book
He got me my switch.
Part2
I took My 53 mercury out with the misses and they had valet parking.
the kid parked the car.
When we came back he could not start my car and said your battery must be dead. I walked out to the car with him opened the hood, told him to put his finger on the oil bath air cleaner. I turned on the key and hit the start button. He was amazed it fired right up
I am 47 and feeling old now
I've been waiting for someone to ask about starting. Remember when that switch was in the floor too?
Darn i am old My 1940 dodge had a foot start, One foot on the clutch one foot on the button I had forgotten about that until now.
Sometimes newer is better
My grandad lived to be 95. Used to always help me on my truck and vice versa. I sure miss that old man!
We went to Western Auto to get him a battery in about 1989. The little girl behind the counter looked at his drivers license for the check he wrote and just stopped dead.
After a long pause, she said there was something wrong with his drivers license since it listed his birth date as '97.
You should have seen the look on her face when I said "M'am, that's 1897"!!
I thought he was joking about not finding the dimmer switch!
The last time I went to a Western Auto parts store, I was looking for replacement brake rotors for a '78 Granada 9" rear axle. Actually I already have one in my Mustang, and one is going into an F-100.
Anyway the parts guy claimed that Granda was not built by Ford, but was built byPontiac. And he was very determined to tell me that I was wrong and that the Granada was not a RWD vehicle. He claimed that they are all FWD. I vaguely knew who the guy was, so I tried to be tactful.
BTW: I knew him as a 1LT in my ARNG unit.
Slicks forever!

Reason: Forgot something
Are there any Western Auto stores left? I worked for a family owned Western Auto store through junior high & high school over 30 years ago. It was the perfect job at the time. I was the bicycle mechanic. I would put together hundreds of bikes before Christmas Day. The day before was hectic as we rolled them out the store to customer's cars. We did carry some auto parts, but our store was mostly housewares. I still get a Christmas card every couple of years from the people that owned the store. Great memories!
