That's interesting, guess I've never tried it before, so I don't know if it would before, LOL.

It's understandable. There is so much information here that it's easy to miss something.

Well I figured mine out!!!!!!!

Cam phaser are not left/right specific. The cam phasers have a main timing mark and a smaller insignificant one on the opposite side. You're supposed to line the main one up on one side of the engine, and use the smaller insignificant one for the other side. It doesn't matter which side gets the main or the other, just as long as they are opposite. You end up with the fifth timing tab on the phaser pointing toward the pistons on one side and pointing away from the pistons on the other (generally speaking). I discovered it by playing through the lobes of the cams side by side, and got a little confused why they weren't 180 degrees apart, but that was because of the angle of the "V8". That's why I said "pointing toward the pistons or away from the pistons."

My online service manual did not even mention this. There was a drawing that sort of indicated it, but the notes missed this very, very, very important little point. I would have been scared to death to line up half of my engine on this "-"! It cranked up beautifully with no codes, after I wasted 5 or 6 hundred dollars. (I did catch the bad tensioner though, that could have been a disaster).

The P0345 was thrown, because the fifth tab could not be found. It was 180 degrees from where it was supposed to be. And your engine will run some and move the truck this way. Mine did.

I'm reading a lot about the cam phasers and VCT's--is there any sort of tutorial or pictorial on these things I can read? I'm a bit new to the modular motors and this is an intriguing aspect of them!

Any help or direction to head?

Thanks

I have been doing some investigations, and one thing i wanted to do was pull the vct solenoids.
Swapped side and fired it up.
This is what i found on the left bank... Which is also where the cam is over retarded. It seems like a serious oil bleed between the front bearing cap and the head and can explain the low oil pressure.
Will take off the valve cover after xmas to investigate further.

To be continued......

Could not wait until after xmas, so i pulled the cover today...
Cam badly scratched. But no bearings????
Will i need to get a new one, or can it be machined?
Cam also gone. Where is the best place to get new ones?

The cam bearings are built into the head and the best thing to do would be to get a head and cam as a unit from a salvage yard and install the whole assembly, rockers, lifters and all. The bearings can be align bored and fitted with bearings but not many shops are equiped to do that job, often not smart enough either. It is pretty difficult.

Having no time to investigate due to much work, i left it with a workshop.
They have done a lot to it, changing plugs, coils, a fuel pump module without any of this was helping. Next they changed all valvetrain components, chains, tentioners, solenoids and phasers. Now it throws the P0345 and P0022 codes.
The motor idles bad, and has no performance. Oil is 5w20 with a delco filter.
I have now the truck in my garage and this weekend i tested the oil pressure.
A sad story. Hot when idling it read 12-15 psi and at 2000 rpm it was 50 psi.
I guess i will have to rebuild it with new bearings and oil pump?
Any ideas what pump to use, Melling M340 or M360?
Or any thoughts on the matter at all?

Please tell me where this shop is at so that I dont have them work on my vehicle or anyone that I know. Just the way you said it, its like they had no idea or clue where to start. Sadly they made some money off of you.

The OP is in Norway so I don't think you need to worry about hitting that shop.

I have prepared myself for a worst case scenario, and are searching for a used motor.
Here in Norway, there are approximately 0.0 available so i look at ebay and such places.
Mine is a 04, vin code 5. can i use the heads from an 06 or such, or do i have to use an 04?
