02 7.3L and a friend is having charging issues. Batteries and alternator are 1 year old and last night driving home, he said the battery light came on. Pulled into an Autozone and they came to the conclusion that the alt was bad. Didn't have one in stock so he tried to limp it home. Got 5 miles from the house and all the gauges in the dash went crazy and the truck died. Towed it home. Went over there today and put a new alternator on. Took an hour to finally get it fired off. Told him he probably killed the batteries. Left it running for an hour or two and took off down the road. Battery light came on again, so he pulled into an Autozone where the batteries checked out bad. Installed new batteries and now the battery light stays on. Need help. A new alternator and batteries and still a light. Whats next to look at?
How did AZ determine you needed a new alternator? Did you check the new one to see if it was charging? Can you or your friend check to see if there is something draining the batteries?
Go back to Autozone after you clean and check all the battery cable connections and grounds. They can check the voltage output in the parking lot. I just had to swap out an alternator and the "new" one had the light come back on the next day. Voltage was dropping to around 13.7 while driving. After triple checking everything else, I swapped the alternator out with them again (warranty) and so far this one has been fine.
You'll probably want to check you fuses (under the hood) forget which one it was but same thing happened t me a while back and 2 alternaters and 2 new batteries later I took it to alternator shop and he replaced one 15 cent fuse, charged me $30 and all good ever since.
