I've got a wicked vibration going through my vehicle that starts at 40 and gets really bad at 55mph. When I slow down by taking my foot off the accelerator the feeling goes away and it's smooth going to a stop. This is in 2WD with the hubs locked in or out. I did find that my front u-joint on the front driveshaft needs to be replaced but I don't think that this is the problem as the vibration exists without the hubs locked in.
It seems as though that this is an engine/transmission thing being that it quits on decel.
Where should I look? Most every sensor has been replaced roughly 1 yr ago. How can I know if it's a transmission issue? I checked the fluid. The fluid and filter were changed about a yr and a half and maybe 9,000mi ago. Fluid level seemed to be high yesterday when I checked it.
Thanks. I will put off this diagnosis until I fix a broken rear spring hanger that I found the other day. The broken hanger may be causing this issue because the driver's side is lower than the pass side. I'm sure this has to affect pinion angle.
If it's a U-joint issue I wouldn't put it off. Last year a U-joint on my front shaft locked up, sending the driveshaft whirling around tearing out all the wiring punching a hole in the transfer case and floorboard etc...Not pretty. A 20$ fix turned into about a 600$ fix.
Oh I know about broken u-joints. I had a '71 Torino GT that broke front joint at 55mph and took out the tailshaft on the tranny. With the rear in my truck at an odd angle because of the broken rear hanger it is possible that the vibration is caused from that.
I will fix the hanger this weekend if the parts arrive and test it out.Luckily with 4WD the truck sits high enough That I can get at the u-joints without even raising it up. Right now the play is only in the front joint on the front driveshaft.
