i have a 1980 ford f150 351 with a holley 4bbl 500 cfm carb, ive recently been having an issue starting it when its real cold(35F or below) it just cranks but wont turn over. i recently replaced the coil and a few other ignition parts, and i also adjusted the choke on it but still nothing...any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
thanks
dave
I believe in 80 you have a solenoid with one small terminal correct? Even though I can't find out whether it does or not by the diagrams I have.
Just as a experiment, make up a jumper wire and run it from the battery + terminal to the coil + terminal. On a cold morning hook the coil + directly to the battery and see if it makes any difference. If it doesn't fine, it's not the resistor bypass circuit. If it does make a difference, you may need to look into that a little bit closer. By the way after it starts, take the jumper wire off, you can't leave it on all the time.
If this is not the original engine or someone has been doing some "wiring", you may have lost the resistor bypass feature.
But no, Franklin2 sounds like he knows what he's doing. I, personally, on cold mornings just give it a little gas, shoot a little starter fluid in the carb, and turn it.

Starts up, usually.
I must be doing something right because I pump the gas two times and hit the key and mine starts right up
