Got a 75 F250 4x4 Hiboy and here is my problem. It only happens when I'm in 4wheel drive. I'm getting a clunk from underneath the truck and can't really tell where the problem is. I jacked the front end up, locked in the hubs, and one tire turns one way and the other turns the other way. This tells me I'm locked in. Ok, while spinning one of the tires, (I'm laying underneath the truck), the front drive shaft rotates but if I grab it I can hold It still. It does'nt matter if it's in 4H,4L. Even in 2H if the hubs are locked in I get this clunk driving down the road. Is it in the transfer case or front pumpkin. If I have my boy hold one of the tires while I'm turnning the other then I can't hold the front driveshaft and keep it from turnning. I think this would mean the front is totally locked in good. The ujoints are all good. There is a little play in the yoke on the end of the driveshaft that goes into the transfer case. But it's been like that for years. This problem just started. Any suggestions?
When do you hear the clunk? Is it when you first let out the clutch, while turning, when you hit a bump, more prominent at certain speeds, does it come at regular intervals?
The only thing that comes to mind is the u-joints at the wheel hubs. Or the pinion / ring gear is damaged or has debris floating around in the housing. Others here should have more info.
Peterson recommends a more thorough diagnostic process. Pull the cover off of the front differential and check things out. It's quick, cheap, and inexpensive. Do you have a full time transfer case? If so, maybe that's why you can turn the driveshaft. Good luck.
dose'nt matter check the front drive shaft u joints. I have a 76 and it did the same thing, changed the front joints and is good as new hope this helps.
if the hubs ae locked and you can hold the front shaft, block the wheels, put the t case in neutral, lock the hubs, and turn the shaft. if you can turn it, look at the axels and see which one is turning. i one axel is turning you have a bad lockout on that side. if the axels are not turning, you have a differential problem.
What do you mean by block the wheels? Block the front wheels while the front end of the truck is jacked up? And where do I look to see if the axels are turnning?
if im guessing right blocking the wheels is just a safety step so the truck dont roll while you are under it since it will be in neutral. you can look at the end od the axle on both sides just before the wheel and see a ujoint on both ends. that is what you are looking at to see if it turns or doesnt turn. to do this youre truck doesnt have to be jacked up
I just checked my 78 F-250...when in 4 hi or low, front wheels off the ground, I cannot turn my driveshaft...???...2wd or N yes...so.. have you been off road lately...get yourself stuck in 2wd, hubs locked....go into 4wd and see if you pull out....
Already done this in the snow. Had hubs locked in but was driving in 2H. I usually keep the hubs locked anyway then if i get stuck or start to spin i just put it in 4H. This is not a daily driver. I use it mostly as a wood hauler out here in the country. Anyway, the truck started to slip so i put it in 4H. It grabbed and i started to move then it slipped out. I went back and forth and it would continue this same proccess. I never heard the clunk from under neath though until i started to get going and pull away. Even when front hubs are locked in and i'm driving in 2H i'll hear it from underneath. Sounds like it may be in T-case because it feels like it might be comming from under the seat. I just didn't think the T-case was engaged in 2H.
when in 2H your transfercase is not POWERING the front but with the hubs locked the front driveshaft is turng the gears in the T-case so...this would not be a loose or broken transmission or transfercase mount would it???..Could only hope it was so obvious...without a teardown I guess only time will tell..good luck..Al

Just put truck T-case in neutral with hubs locked in with truck on the ground and front driveshaft wouldn't turn. So I jacked front end off the ground and I can turn front shaft and one wheel turns one way the other wheel the oppisite but there is no way to see if either axel is turnning. This truck has the big ***** at the end of the axel on the inside of the wheels. I'm getting frustrated here trying to figure this out. I'd like to get some clue before tearing thing apart.
the axles are working...they are turning your wheels.....un-lock your hubs...drive it....see if you get the same noises....this will eliminate the front end if it still clunks
