hubs or differential
Hi, yesterday i took my 78 bronco to the day after thanskgiving turkey trail out here in el paso tx. Out to almost the end of the trail something started cranking. So i took off the 4 wheel drive and stop. Then i lock it again took it to a sand dune and slowly tried it and it would slip and make a cranking sound. So i was wondering if my manual hubs when out or is it the differential. how can i tell if its the locking hubs or differential.

I would start buy removing the front hubs and checking them... its only a few allen bolts on each side and would give you an idea of where to start....
Also, jack up the front end and spin the tires, listening to the diff, checking to make sure the hubs are engaging/disengaging the axles properly and go from there.

I would agree with G_k50, when you pull the hub off you will be able to see the axle splines and if they are torn up there is a very helpful writeup on here step by step for replacing the D44 axles. Just did mine a week ago if you have any questions during it.
