I recently acquired a set of Moroso chrome valve covers for the 351M but they've been sitting for a Looooong time in someone's damp basement. The chrome surface has some intermittent flecks of rust peaking through.
Can anyone share their experience with what works as far as cleaning up the rust and polishing the chrome without scratching everything?
If the rust is coming through the chrome finish not much you can do it needs to be re-chromed for best results or you are facing a never ending battle against rust.
Try some Wenol polish (red tube). It'll work off the rust, add some degree of protection, and get it decent (but not perfect).
I'm not a big fan of chrome anything unless the vehicle is garaged 24/7 or maintained with commitment. With chrome, it's not if it will rust - it's when it start to rust. For example, I see vehicles at shows with perfect bumper chrome but if ya take a peek at the back side it's usually rusted all to heck.
I'd say everyone is right depending on how "perfect" u want them. If u want perfect, re chrome them. If u don't need perfect, very fine steel wool, wenol, never-dull, Auto-sol, or even turtle wax polish & scratch remover.(green and white can). I'd use a fine steel wool first to attack the rust then gradually work into the polishes such as auto-sol.
