trans question
So my family has always had Fords for as long as I can remember and now I'm looking to buy my first.
The truck in question is an '98 Ford Ranger, 2WD Automatic with a 3.0L V6 and the purchase price is $1400.
The issue is that the truck will not take off in drive. If you take off in second and then shift into drive it runs fine.
So I guess the question is, what causes this? Is it an easy fix? (relatively speaking, I know once you start talking about transmissions, nothing is really easy.) Is this a common problem? Is it still worth purchasing?

you have a 5r55 tranny and they are known for have problems with the separator plate
gasket blowing out ! check this link out , i also have the same problems with our 99 ranger i have to take off in 1st gear then shift to drive !

Okay well I'm going to be completely honest, I have pretty bad ADD and well, I'm also not the most careful person in the world so I dont think I'll be tackling this myself, unless its outrageousness expensive, which lead to my next question:
Pay to have the plate fixed?
or
Replace the whole trans?
If the first is better, what do you think that will set me back?

a lot of shops will want to sell you a complete rebuild , and some shops dont have a clue
about this problem !
around here in az it was $300-$400 and around $1800-$2000 for a rebuild !
when you go looking around take a copy of that link to show them so you want end up fussing with them and if they tell you that there is no such thing as what your showing them then find a different shop !!

MIght want to check Edmunds for used truck values by entering options/mileage to see what truck is worth. Considering the scenario with the worse case being a complete rebuild the cost would probably exceed value of truck. If seller won't adjust price for the repair probably better to search for a truck without issues.
