I have a 2002 diesel super duty and want to replace the stock radio/cd player, speakers and add a sub eventually. As there are some killer deals out there right now, would like some advice as to what will fit and work for my needs. I don't need bluetooth, Just want a unit that will fit with little modification and have radio features and cd. I was always a Pioneer fan and my son is a Kenwood fan. Just saw a JCV touchscreen double size (DD) for $250.00 at WallyWorld. My limit is around that price. Now as to speakers, between Sony xplods, Pioneer, Dual, JVC, any suggestions? Also, where can you fit a sub box in this truck without sacrificing the area under the back seat? Can you put one under the front seat? What sub would fit? I'm not looking to disturb the neighbors, just make the sounds not sound like a portable transistor radio of years past. The stock system sucks!
You can squeeze a double din in there with some very minor cutting there are plenty on here with pictures of their installs. As far as head units which brand floats your boat with the options and price you need. I have run Alpine, Kenwood, Clarion and currently have a Pioneer Premier HU in my truck. Out of the speakers you have listed the Pioneers would probably suit you. I would recommend listening to several different speakers and then making your decision on what your ears tell you.
You didn't mention if your truck is a single cab, super or crew cab. Typical places are behind the back seat, under it, the center console and for crew cabs behind the center console on the floor between the front and rear seats.
Thanks Rugby
I just ordered a Pioneer AVH P4200DVD head unit from Crutchfield and I am considering getting the Pioneer TSD 1702 R speakers for the front for now. They have a very good spec and are available for less than 100 bucks from Amazon. CF wanted 170 for them. I know I will need to do some sheet metal work in the door but thats ok. Looks like a slight trim to get the 6 3/4" speakers to fit. The 6 3/4 speakers have a much better sount quality than the 6x8 units. I'll figure out the sub and amp later. With a 2002 super duty extended cab, I have yet to figure out where to mount them. Looked on here and don't see any others that have done that. I don't want to take away any space from under the rear jump seat. I'd love to see if anyone has mounted a sub under the front seat or in the existing console.
I would like at some online retailers for buying, such as sonicelectronix or etronics as Crutchfield can be expensive. JL audio makes a stealth subwoofer that replaces the center console seat and they sound very good, however they are expensive
I ended up with Infinity Kappas as they sound much better and for $75 a pair, it's a great deal. They sound so o o loud with just the new head unit that I don't think for now I will even need an amp. Might consider a sub mono amp for the bass requirements though as I already have the wiring for it.
I have been running Infinity Kappas and JL's for about 6 years. I recently installed a Pioneer AVH-P3200DVD and with the built in amp on the HU, the speakers sound even better! I am also running a Bazooka tube under the rear seat. it is the 8" version. It is by far one of the best sounding systems I have ever had and I didn't spend an arm and a leg like I have in the past. Of course, going with ALL digital media helps out a bunch too! With this HU, I can finally dial in the sound the way it's supposed to be. I was running the same speakers and my Bazooka tube through the factory head unit and I could never get the highs and mids where I wanted them. Now there are no issues and the sound is phenomenal!
