Allow me to think out loud for a minute... What do you drive now? And will you be keeping the '89?
If it's going to be used as a daily driver that tows 3500 lbs or less every now and then, have you considered a Ranger? It would be easy to find a SC Ranger with a 5 speed and 4WD. Unless you need it to haul people, the Ranger should work. Either the 3.0 or 4.0 would do well.
If you need a fullsize, have you considered a '97+ truck? You will have an easier time finding a SC with a 5 speed with 2 or 4WD. The 4.2 or the 4.6 are both great motors and would return decent mileage.(Edit- I see you already have a '99...)
Also I would not be afraid to get a 5.0/Auto truck either. I always wanted a 5.0/5speed truck, but the SCab may be harder to find in that combo, but man would it be sweet!
I liked my 302s if they have the proper gearing. Its not as reliable as a 300 but I don't think any gas engine is. There are many more bolt on options for the 302 and it responds well to any improvement on the exhaust side. My 83 was slightly modded and lasted until 220k. i love my 300 but would have no problem with getting another 302. I would look for a MAF and roller cam.

I wanted a 94-96 extended cab short bed 4x4 6cyl 5 spd. I looked for a while and found I was not going to find everything I wanted. I did see one truck with everything but 4x4. I ended up finding what I wanted, but with a 302 auto, and a 93. It has plenty of power for me, I do miss shifting the gears(Ive always had sticks in all my vehicles, and now I have 2 autos and only 1 stick!) but it has its plus' too. Gas mileage sucks, but if you look on fuel economy.gov, even when new the I6 only had a couple MPG on the 302, and it still sucked.
If the recent freeze didn't kill my 302, it should still have a lot of life left in it even with nearly 216K on it. It has 3.55's and even with the noisy M5R2 it has it gets around really good.
I had no problems with passing and it's even better when dropping a gear or two.
I wouldn't shy away from the 302. It's really a good engine. The 300 is a better "truck" engine but the 302 really isn't far off..it's not a turd by comparison. I looked at a 302/5speed/extended cab/4x4 not too long ago. It drove pretty nicely and had good around-town power. As far as fuel mileage there won't be much difference between the 300. They can last a long time too. 200k miles wouldn't be uncommon.
Since the 302 is so popular, you can get them really easily, if you ever needed an engine. Parts are super cheap also. I think you're more likely to find the 302 in an extended cab truck with 4x4. Also for me, I wouldnt get anything but a manual transmission in these ford trucks..especially behind the 300. Even if it is the mazda trans. The 4 speed autos in these trucks just don't feel right to me.
The 302 is a good motor, but lacks low end torque. Thats why the 4.9 is actually a better motor for a truck that hauls stuff. My truck has a 302 and it does just fine, but could use more low end power.

Right now I have the 99 with a 4.2l and auto trans for my DD, but it is my baby and I hate driving it on the crappy roads I have to drive every day. I will be keeping the 89, becuase right now it is the only 4x4 we have. My only concern is that the tranny is starting to slip in first gear, that is why I am more interested in a 4x4. I was wanting the 92-96 model years becuase they are a little newer, and I know they are reliable pickups. As for the ranger statement.. no I have not and will not consider one. I am 6'1" tall and 250lbs. Plus whenever we decide to do anything my buddies always like to pile in my pickup, another reason I want the ext. cab so bad. I am wanting a pre-97 truck becuase I like the body style, and they are less expensive, plus I think that they are more reliable.
Isn't the 99 with the 4.2 a real dog? My friend has a 2001 with the 4.2 and I have no idea why anyone would want that motor in an F150. Personally, I would replace that truck with a 92-96.

Not at all. I don't see why everyone thinks the 4.2 is such a bad engine. I love mine. I outran my friends duramax with it on the highway. I know there were problems with the earlier ones, but that is why I bought a 99. I don't have any complaints on the truck or the engine. Mine has given me 18k trouble free miles in the year I have owned it.
So I finally found exactly what I want, f150 supercab with a 4.9l and a 4x4 manual trans. Only problem is that it is 3 hours away from me and just out of reach on my price range It has 189k miles, but from the pictures the body looks like it is in great shape! So now I gotta see if I can afford a loan or if a bank will even give me one (I am a senior in highschool, so maybe with a co-signer?) And I still gotta drive 3 hours to get it, just to turn around and drive right back.
I personally don't like the 302 in pickups. My dad has one in his f150 and we have had the oil pan off of it twice since we've owned it.. I hear nothing but great things about the 300's reliability. For what I am wanting the truck for, I think the 300 six suits me perfectly, and I won't have to worry about buying a truck with 200k + miles. But who knows.. maybe this would be a good oportunity for me to get a new opinion on them. I know windsor's are known for reliability, that is one of the reasons I bought my 1989 f150 with the 351w. But with the experience I have had with the 302 I am not impressed with it at all.
I must say you are Obviously a person who has done their homework and knows what reliability is all about.. that is the Perfect combo in a truck...
Well I like to think I have done my homework anyways. And as for falling in love, I think I may have already haha. I'm not scared of the amount of miles on it at all, from what I understand these motors are known to get well into 200k +. And I am not so worried about the rest of the truck either, it looks like the previous owner/s have taken great care of it. I know it was used for pulling trailers, but that is exactly what these trucks were built to do, so I am not concerned about that either.
