Looking at purchasing a F-150 1974 2WD with a 360- 4 barrel and I think a C-6 trans. All factory as I can tell. Any ideas on fuel mileage or am I better off looking for a 302 or a 351W? Light hauling don't really need a big block but if the mileage is not much different then it does not really matter. Also is there anything else I should look at on this truck that I might need to know. I had a 1977 for several years and wish I never got rid of it.

If it is a 360 it came with a 2 barrel. The 390 could be ordered I think but I think you could only get the 2 barrel in a truck. It must have been changed.I had a 74 with the 360 and put a 4 barrel on it.After a while I switched back to the 2 barrel.Gas hog! Expect 12 to 13 mpg.The 351W or 351M in the 77 and up model was better on gas.
A 390 could have been had with a 4bbl. carb, but 360 only got the 2 bbl. A friend of mine and my brother-in-law both had '76 390's with 4 bbl carbs. One of them also had a 74 with 360 2 bbl and the 390's both got a little better fuel mileage. It could have been due to the 4 bbl carb as the 2 engines are very similar. If the truck is in good condition body wise, I wouldn't run from it just because of the engine, but a 302 or 351M would do a little better on fuel than the 360. But the 360 is a very reliable engine all in all. And if you are unhappy with the 360 engine, it's not all that difficult to swap it for a different engine.
