So. My roommate's '88 F250 automatic FI won't start. The fuel pumps are coming on when he starts it, the battery is getting almost 13V across the terminals, the starter is turning over the engine, there is power at the dizzy, it has gas-we just put 3 gallons in the front tank and there's 10 in the rear: everything seems to be functioning, but it just won't catch. Any thoughts?
It has started fine since he got it in July, but on the first day we had where the ice stayed on the puddles all day long, it stopped starting. Sounds like thick oil, tired battery, or cold gas that won't evaporate to me, he's convinced it's something else...
Fuel pumps can operate and still not provide enough pressure to start the truck, check fuel pressure at fuel rail.you can also use starter fluid while cranking if it starts briefly that will tell you it is a fuel delivery problem and your ignition is okay..
Mmmkay, will do. There is one pump from each tank though, right? Neither tank will start the engine, so both pumps would have had to die simultaneously. Or so it seems to me... But I have no idea what I am talking about. There's also a valve that switches between tanks, right, could it be that?
Thanks for writing back!
There are actually 3 fuel pumps, one low pressure pump in each tank and one high pressure pump on the frame, but there are numerous issues that can prevent fuel delivery problems like the fuel pressure regulator fuel pump relay switch among others so don't be to quick to blame the pumps if testing it shows no fuel delivery.you can also run test for diagnostic codes which may give you more info. check around at auto parts stores some will do it for you.
Hmm, Ok thanks. I've destroyed and rebuilt pretty much every system on my VW, and about half of my sister's Triumph, but there both '72s, with four cylinder Carbureted engines. Pretty damn simple to diagnose ANYTHING in an hour or two of poking around, with next to no mechanical knowledge. I'm so out of my depth with this giant V8 FI thing....
