Say, what have some of you guys done when faced with the thought of a replacement engine?
Destroke?
Reman? If so, any particular vendor?
New 7.3 engine? If so, from Mexico, maybe or Canada?
My brother-in-law has an '00 and is looking to replace it with an '08 Dodge Mega cab.
I like the early Cummings engines, but not too sure about the new ones.
He pulls a good size trailer for his cookie business along with a 32' RV.
I've even talked to him about a low miles used engine and doing a little work before installing to make sure all is good to go.
Putting in a common rail engine is a nice thought. Although the price for that swap is pretty high, in fact high enough that you can usually rebuild the current motor and transmission to provide more than enough power to tow and you will still save money.
A new truck is always an option, but the cost of them is getting quite high too.
A reman 7.3L from Ford will set you back ~$4500 (Parts Guy Ed or Riffraff Diesel), so not cheap, but not bad either. It really depends on what kind of shape the truck is in and how long he plans on keeping it.
If my engine ever dies on me, my current approach would be to contact Clay for one of his reman's that he offers. I can't find the link on his website at the moment but it's a good deal at about $4K and some change. You have to provide the labor yourself though...
