I went thru this recently due to a twisted sector shaft. here's a recap of what I learned.
If you have a reasonable local yard, and you understand the trades, maybe. The guys around here will give you ~ 90 days of warranty and take ~ $120 in return for one. NAPA's only a few bucks more.
I couldn't find a "new" one from ford, only remans. They were well over $200 and they wanted $150 for the core. (the sector shaft was over $300). With the condition of the sector shaft, that was a non-starter.
REDHEAD makes a fine product and is priced with the King Ranch versions. There are a few other "small shops" that have similar reputations but don't have a huge following. Chip, at PSS (powersteering.com) is one of those guys (Lariat pricing). He will rebuild yours or sell you one already done.
The only other choice would be a rebuild from the local parts store. I'd consider one from Cardone but haven't seen many other rebuilders in their class. many offer "lifetime warranties", many with strings and fine print.
I went the PSS route, with chip. All indications are positive but don't even have 250 miles on the unit yet.
What are your symptoms?
I recently had the Upper/Lowers BJ's replaced with camber shims, my alignment guy has it right, all other linkage is good, but, have about 7-10* of play...kinda annoying and I am wondering if the Steering box is the culprit?
