So I posted a couple of weeks ago about my truck not boosting o ver 11-14 lbs (it is a 99 F350 with a fully built Garrett turbo). Anyways, some of the ideas were a boost fooler (which was right on, I found it) and maybe a leaking boot (which was also right on, keep reading).
Anyways, I was driving the truck this last weekend and started hearing some noise from the engine bay. Kind of sounded like a vaccuum sucking right behind the glove box. I would then watch my guages and noticed that when I heard the sound, I had no boost and the EGT's were going through the roof. If I put my foot into it, i heard a thump and then the truck would take off (boost came back and EGT's went down). So my question is this. Am I looking at a bad intercooler boot or is this a boot as part of the turbo? I got under the hood and tightened the clamps on the boots, but it didn't help. I never replaced these, so any help trying to identify the bad boot and installation tips would be appreciated.
I found my boost leak with my homemade air compressor adapter (made from a 4" dia plastic pipe end cap ... and a tire valve stem.) Clamp to intake rubber hose... Apply 10 - 20 psi max and you will find your leak... see pic:
