carb questions

So this weekend i rebuilt the Motorcraft 2150 carb in my '83 f150 302 v8 and i got it rebuilt and back on with out any problems. The questions i have relate to the electric choke and how that should be set relating to the butterfly valve on top. Anyway besides that i set it on the medium setting on the cam because i couldnt open the accelerator and get it to set to high idle. It started and i shut it down and the outside of the carb was coated in gas. I set the rich/lean screws two turns out from full in. Anyway if anybody could help me or offer advice i could appreciate it. -corey

I would think the choke is the furthest from your mind; do you know from where
this gas is coming?

id upload a pic but im not quite sure. My best guess is on top with the butterfly valve there are two brass nozzles coming out at an angle and when the butterfly is shut they are on the top side of the butterfly, if that makes any sense. I didnt take the butter fly apart so...

Gas all over the place usually means the float is stuck inside, and the carb is overfilling with fuel. This could be caused by a mistake on your part in assembly, the float is not adjusted correctly, or simply a chunk of rubber has come off the hose when you installed it or some other piece of dirt keeping the needle open.

i went off of this Motorcraft 2150 rebuild. pic heavy. - Page 2 - International Full Size Jeep Association it seemed like it was moving okay the float would sag under its own weight when i had it apart.

So I went out and had somebody else start it and looked for where the gas comes out and it comes out one of two vertical tubes that feed directly from the float bowl. I pulled the top off the carburator and it was full of gas but the float was still down.

The two vertical tubes are the vent tubes. Pull the float assembly out, sop some of the fuel out with a rag, and look down in the hole where the needle goes and make sure it's spotless. Also take a quick look down around the bottom of the fuel bowel. It should be spotless. If you see any foreign material in the bottom of the bowel, that's a clue that you are passing dirt through the needle into the carb, and you are going to have this problem till you get rid of the dirt.

Re-assemble the float and needle, and then take your finger and push lightly down on the needle only. When it's seated in the hole, the float should be close to level or a little lower. You should have a guage that came with the kit where you can check it and re-set the float level. Just be gentle with the rubber tip on the needle.

i disassembled the whole carb and soaked in carb cleaner and it came out clean. so when i checked the setting i lightly pushed down the needle to raise the float and it seemed good according to the little measuring stick

Make sure the float isn't sunk and full of fuel, due to a pinhole leak.

You are going in the right direction.

That doesn't mean you are not pumping dirt into the carb from a dirty fuel system full of rust.

That is a good point but its never been a problem. When i disconnected the fuel line i put a piece of tape over it to keep crud out, but crazier things have happened

Most people will crank the engine for a bit with the fuel line removed from the carb and fuel filter removed, and the line from the pump going into a glass container.

This will pump out most of the crud in the line, and you can see the quality of the fuel you are getting from the tank.

Yeah don't start the truck with frozen water in the coolant passages, you could do some damage... hmmm...

Anyway to get it to a warm garage, so it can thaw out so you can get some antifreeze into it?
