This one has me kinda stumped; friends 99 lost another stater the other day (spins but won't slide out to engage). Picked up a new (not reman) from Napa and installed Thurs night, worked great till Sat then the whir was back. Starter didn't engage. Has done it a few times and every time when you hit the key again it starts right up.
4 teeth in a row on the flywheel have chips out of them (starter side). Only about 1/6 of the way thru the tooth. All the other teeth look ok. Watched the starter engagement thru the insp cover and it's getting full tooth engagement even when starting on the "bad" teeth.
OT: 10 years ago I had this problem on a school bus, had the starter "rebuilt" and gone thru everytime it would squeal instead of start, They could never find anything wrong with it. Traded the bus of and never thought of it again till now.........
Just my opinion not experties but I'm on my 3rd nappa new starter. Not sure whats going on but the flywheel is in good shape just ocasionally spins without engaging! Very anoying. For a little more you can get a motorcraft starter that will last as long as the original. Having them rebuilt is also an option.Problem I've got is getting my money back from Nappa. Everytime I bring my truck by it wont do it and they want to bench test it and if it doesnt do it they wont warranty it.
I don't think so mine goes shhing. A guy at work was having the same prob and bought one from bumper to bumper no problems since. He did say his new starter sounds like it turns over slower though.
