Need some advice

Hey Guys,

I need some advice as I'm getting conflicting info. I ran across a used 1969 302 that has a set of 1968/1969 351W heads bolted onto it.

The guy selling it is asking $200.00, He wants a 289 for the Car he's restoring.I'm only looking to get the heads to bolt onto my 79 302.

My brother in law's neighbor is looking for a 302 block to build up for his 83 Capri that currently has a 3.8 V-6, he's willing to go halves with me to get the block.

Now my understanding is that the 60's blocks had more material / were a little better quality and some had a higher Nickel content. So, I'm thinking this could be a win - win deal for both of us.

My brother in law is trying to tell me the only 60's blocks that were better in quality or came with a high Nickel content was the Boss 302. I think other wise.

He also advised me that i would have to spend almost a grand to get those heads worked so they would run on unleaded gas. IE hardened valve seats...etc...etc.

I'm thinking he's feeding me a line of POOH and doesn't know his rump from a hole in the ground. Or he's trying to stick it to me to get this stuff for himself.

So, in saying that I thought I'd post my question to the guys that helped me in the past with good quality info.

Is that block and head combo worth 200 and would I be able to use the heads on my 79 302?

I currently have no casting numbers as this guy lives about 2.5 hours away so i haven't had a change to inspect these in person, however i plan to next weekend.

Here are the 2 pics the guys sent me:

Sounds fair to me.
Best to get casting numbers to verify which 302 it really is.

Doing the exhaust valve seats for unleaded gas is only required if you are going to run this engine a ton of miles.
It takes years for an engine to get back the investment.

Dump a bottle of lead additive every once in a while.

Lead additive is what i was thinking too

Yeah, i thought it was fair myself, however i think my brother in law is going to talk the other guy out of the deal.

that would leave me kinda high and dry, but i have another set of 351W heads local that the guy only wants 50.00 for so i might jump on those.

he has them listed as:

two 71 ford 351 Windsor heads
number on one is 1d23
number on other is 1e10

Not sure about those casting numbers, anyone know ?

Tommy

I'm bumping this back to the top for you, I would like to read more about the nickel content.

Tommy
1D23 Cast date = April 23 1971
1E10 Cast date = May 10 1071

a normal match for numbers correct engine

IIRC,the nickel content started to go down in 1972

You can read about it here
