Question fuel filter

hey everybody i have read several comments about fuel filter problems. i need to know when to change and where to find. i have 4.2 v6 and have read about the need for a special tool to do this. is it worth buying the tool and doing it myself or just taking it in. any idea about what this would cost at dealership?
any info would be greatly appeciated.

fuel filter

I changed mine at 50,000 miles. I had to spend $8.00 on a plastic tool. Cannot remove the fuel line with out the tool!!!! you will destroy it . With the tool easy job couple of min. The filter itself is not very much$ good Idea to change often.

fuel filter

The fuel filter is on the inside of your truck frame on the drivers side inline with the bed edge of your truck. The metal fuel filter tool is better then the plastic type and costs about $6-10.00 at any parts store. The filter price is anywhere from $7-10.00 at any parts store also.I usually change mine every other oil change or 10k miles. If the dealer does it for you its gonna cost anywhere from $40.00 up.Good luck!

fuel filter

Hi all,

Same here for me on the 99 F150 with the 4.2, I change my fuel filter every 10k 'cause I bought 10 filters at the parts store when they were on sale for $5 each. Once you get the knack of using that special tool, it's a breeze.
