Ok here's what happened. I was pulling a smaller stump out of the ground after I had dug around the base pretty well.I pulled it out without even hitting the gas. I put it in reverse and hit the gas, it felt like my truck was hung up on some thing and would barley move. I was in 4x4 low, I tried to put it in park and it made some weird tapping clanking sound. I put it in N and put out and back into 4x4 low, same result. 4x4 H no probs 2wheel no prob? Truck shifts good no probs ever like this. I'm lost on what it could be. I have a 2004 F250 4x4 5.4l manual 4x4 and manual lockers
Don't you have to put it in reverse to shift it out of 4x4 in a manual, like you can't pull the shifter and keep on driving because the gears won't kick out... Not sure if this has anything to do with it, but something to think about I guess. My last truck was ESOF, same with my new one.
I'm curious about this issue. I have an '03 5.4 with an auto and my issue seems to be a bit similar. I can go from 2wd to neutral to 4hi with no issues. However, I have to put the truck in neutral, turn of the ignition, pull the truck into 4lo and then refire. I have the manual 4x4 selector and manual hubs. If I don't turn the truck off it makes a horrible grinding/whinning sound. I asked the dealer and the said that this is a common issue.

The rachet noise or having to turn the truck off? Yes its normally to hear racheting sounds as the trasfer case locks up. I don't know anybody that has to shut their truck off. 1 thing yall are leaving out is the brake. You have to have the brake pressed to get into/out of 4L. Sorry it just won't go any other way. 4H is different.
