My next project is to clean up the engine compartment.
MY Plan:
Paint the engine compartment - not sure what type of black
Paint aircleaner, and valve covers ford blue
Replace hoses
And any other ideas from this forum would be greatly appreciated
Anyone have advice on the best way to tackle this, keep in mind that i will not be removing the engine. And i dont want a show truck but just a clean looking engine bay.
Thanks Al
My F100 got about 8 hours of a 3500 p.s.i. rented pressure washer.
Next project will get the same treatment.
You can not rent steam cleaners here, or that would be even better.
Yes power washers are good but If you use degreasers it helps a lot and make shure you dont get water down the carb..It will probly have to dry out..I carry paper towles and WD-40 when i power wash it at tha car wash..when the dist.s wet she wont want to start..just dry the cap and WD-40 will remove water from any problem areas..good luck bill
yup buy a gallon of degreeser and take out the motor get a spraybottle and spray down the block and engine bay with degreeser let it set for about 20 minutes and pressure wash the heck out of that baby but your best bet is powdercoating the engine bay or rihnolining it last alot longer than paint thats open to alot of heat and elemetal wear and tear
Cruise up to the 73 to 79 forum. Theres a guy there that just did a tech article on engine detailing that is really good. I think its called engine detailing 101. Im sure you can get lots of great ideas from his post.
I use a product called Gunk Engine Brite made by SolderSeal. It comes in an aerosol can and you can get it at any NAPA or the likes.I follow that up with a wipe of MEK. The Gunk Engine Brite says "known to cause Cancer in the State of California" on the can, so you know it's gotta be hardcore good stuff. Besides, if you live anywhere else, other than California, you don't have to worry about it causing Cancer!
careful pressure washing a 40 year old engine or you may find yourself some new leaks that you never had before! that oil and gunk on there may be sealing it up.
oh and as far as the valve covers, if you spray paint them they will most likely come out looking like roasted ***. you may as well go the extra mile, remove the little 1/2" bolts, take them off, and go out and get them powder coated.
if you are going to buy new valve covers on ebay be careful which ones you go with. theres so many cheap chinese knock offs out there. and then theres a jerk on there trying to sell chrome ones that he says are "428 cobra jet! and hi performance 390"
for $375, when in actuality, they are the same power by ford ones that come on 352 and 360 as well.
i am going to hold off on my engine compartment restoration until i am ready to remove the engine, that way i can cover the entire firewall with dynamat sound and heat insulation. the thin piece of metal that separates the cab from the engine compartment just doesnt cut it.
