Hey everyone, I am new to the site for a good reason. I just recently purchased a 2001 F350 this summer. I have had to make some modification to bring the truck up to par, but more about that at another time.
I am trying to wire the third brake light on a leer cap that I bought off of craigslist. I thought it would be as simple as me tapping into the driver's side brake light to power the light. So, I did. The light comes on when I depress the brake, but it also comes on when I put on the left turn signal. Does anyone know the solution to just have the light come on while using the brake. It drives me crazy to look back and see that light blinking every time I make a left turn.
Here is what I did, I spliced 1 wire to the ground (black wire), and the other wire to a Green/Orange wire. There is a third wire (brown), there is only power to it when the headlights are on.
In the wiring loom going to the rear, somewhere towards the rear, is a single wire coming out of the loom that is cut off and shrink wrapped on the end. It might be labeled as CHMSL or something like that. It is a brake only light wire that is there purposely for what you are trying to do.
I believe it's on all model years going back quite a bit, but I'm not sure how far.
My truck is an 01, but you can see the green wire right by my fingertips. It has the plastic shrink on the end of it. The brake light for my topper is spliced into it, and that is what's between my thumb and middle finger. You can see the spare tire in the pic. You can see the wiring harness the green wire is coming out of. I hope this pic helps. The harness is right by the spare tire, behind the license plate.
