OK - Before I mess something up again - I want to make sure that I have the damper locating dowel notch in the right position. Is the damper locating dowel notch the small hole between two of the 4 bolts holding the Harmonic balancer on or is it the larger finger size hole that is toward the outside of one of the 3 spokes on the harmonic balancer?
If it is the first I am in good shape and will start the initial torque on the LH head and turn the engine by hand before proceeding to the RH head.
I have read where it really doesnt matter if the heads have been off long enough for the lifters to bleed down - but then again I bent a push tube last time and it cost me another $400 in new gaskets and tubes, so hopefully someone will respond this evening.
everyone must be off to grandmas for thanksgiving - I figure I'll go with what I have - it is the dampener and you have to line up the alignment hole to put the bolts in, so here goes nothing - or everything
straight up I can't tell you. I know Cheezit is lurking around tonight so maybe this bump will get his attention. DON"T proceed till you know for sure.
ok hears the deal.........
the pin is the small on on the front crankshaft between 2 of the 4 bolts.
the key thing in this is that you dont want any piston at top dead center. if the engine is 30-40* off tdc no piston will be up. this is a good spot to have the engine in then you dont need to worry about location.
remember do not fully torque the head till after you have spun the engine over. its easer to do with the glowplugs out.
I hope the 3rd time is the charm
Thanks guys - I figured that I really didnt want any of the pistons at TDC so I rotated the engine and looked at both situations. when I had the actual dowl locating notch at 6 oclock - none of them were, however when I had the hole that I described near the outer ring spokes, I did have a piston at TDC.
Moved it back to the actual dowl locating notch and put the LH head on - rockers and tightened her down to 70 ft lbs - turned her over three times, no problem - went to the RH head and did the same and turned her over 3 times again - no problems.
Will take them all to 140 and then 210 ft lbs in the morning - should I turn the engine at 140 and 210 again or am I good to go at this point?
I would say you are good. cover up the intake ports so nothing falls in.I suspect you may have a had a miscut gasket. but only a guess with no block and no gasket to look at.
To be honest - I think that I originally did not position the push tube correctly. That caused the initial bent push tube. After that, I was paranoid - and until yesterday had not taken the fan and stator out, so I was trying to rotate the crank from underneath the engine, trying to get my arms around the steering linkeage and lower radiator hose.
I also had been using Victor Reinz balck onyx gaskets, and to honest with you, once I got the Ford gaskets and compared them, I was not impressed with the Reinz, so there may have been a factor there.
Anyway - Have the entire top covered up. will crank them down inthe morning and start putting everything else back together.
Again - thanks for you help - need to look you up next time I'm in Ft. Worth/ Dallas area/
Will update tomorrow as I am putting it back together.
anytime your in town would be glade to meet up with you. Sadly I have not been back home to Cali in a few years. man I miss home. even if it has turned in to the peoples republik
peoples republic of California it is - Not being a native, it's kind of scary at times. The wife is from here and she tells me that the peopel and the prices are what you pay for the weather here in San Diego.
Anyway - went down and got a new clamp for the EGR cooler to the turbo adapter tube and gasket cause the screw snapped when I was taking it off, and also picked up new copper washers for the injectors.
Got the heads torqued to 210, cylinder block drains and starter back on, glow plugs in, injectors in, HPOP rails in, new stand pipes WHAT!!!!! they aparently made some changes to the stand pipes?? The Hex drive is a lot bigger than the older ones.
So that meant I was done for the evening. Will have to hit a parts store this morning when they open up to try and find one big enough.
yikes - I'll tell my wife that - maybe she wont be so mad, but then again she will probably respond with something like cheezit would have had it done in a couple of days and not broken anything!
man we have stuff go wrong all the time. its the nature of the beast. If I was doing it as a thing in my driveway I would not have near the tools I have. I do this for a living and have to have the stuff.
So got it all back together - just put the oil in and 4 gallons of Gold coolant. I think that I am going to go get some sleep and then go over everything in the morning before I try to start it up. Make sure there's nothing left undone and no extra parts or tools left in the wrong places. Will pick up some distilled water to top off the coolant as well.
