Background: 1990 F150 4x4 351w E4OD with a Vortech Supercharger, 4" lift and 35" tires. I bought the truck with all these upgrades, and I dont know if anything has been done to the rear end. The speedo is about 20% slow if that helps. This is a 8.8 axle right? Did they come with 4:10's? some sort of locker?
My problem is that while offroading (jumping) I believe I bent the left rear axle shaft. The wheel wobbles slightly when turned (I have swapped wheels). Sound like an axle shaft?
I plan to do a complete rebuild on the axle soon and I would like to know if there is any upgrades I should do while I am in there. (stronger axles, gears, etc) I cant spend a ton of money, but I am open for suggestions.
I have read that a properly equipped 8.8 should be able to handle up to 38" tall tires. If your shaft is bent the cheapest thing to do is go to a salvage yard and get the shaft you need. Otherwise there are several companies that offer stronger shafts but are they within your price range? I checked out what Currie wants for a pair of high performance axle shafts and there around $400. But they should be completely ready to go with bearings and everything.
