My sisters 02 5.4 sd has been making some noise. She was told it was the timing chain, something about low oil and something, and she has a leaky valve cover. Apparently her 'guy' has replaced the valve cover gaskets twice, and he can't get it to seal and it's leaking on the back side of the motor.

So, now I have been enlisted to see if I can help fix it. I should have the truck in my possesion tomorrow does anyone have any tips, or tricks, on how to do the timing chain and put the gaskets on correctly? I'm not worried about swapping them so much as there might be some secret that he has been overlooking or doing wrong. He told her that the fel-pro gaskets didnt fit just right, so I'm not sure what he's been doing.

If someone has a pdf from the service manual that would be really cool too.

Well if he can't install valve cover gaskets, I'm not sure I'd jump into the timing chains just because he said so. It could be the chains, but there's other things that can make noise too, broken exhaust manifold studs and the ticking lash adjusters seem to be common issues.

 

Yea, I was thinking the same thing, but until I get I am just going on hearsay. Hopefully it's not too screwed up. It would be nice if someone had the 5.4 service manual it would be cool to see the diagrams.
