here is the problem! i have a 1988 f-250 7.3 diesel. i dont know what auto trans i have. sticker on inside of door says "K" for the trans. when you take off from a dead stop it is take a really long time for it to shift into 2nd gear. when it shifts into 3rd its at about 45mph. any time you drop speed below 45 mph it goes back into 2nd. what is the problem with this?
1988 will the the 3 speed C6 bullet proof transmission!
It could the VRV (Vacuum Regulartor Valve) ((I think)) could be in need of an adjustment.
But before you start messing around with that, get under the truck with a can of WD-40, and spray the hell out of the shift linkage on the driver side of the transmission and work it, and spray some more then go for a drive see if anything changes.
The VRV is on the side of the injector pump with two vacuum pipes going to it. You should have around 20in of vacuum going to it and about 18in of vacuum out of it at idle.
Is your vacuum pump good, do you have plenty of power assist at the brakes?
first thing, check the transmission fluid. This can cause all weird problems, and is usually overlooked. Next I would say check the Vacuum regulator. I would guess yours is not adjustable, but you can buy and adjustable one to replace your (possibly not functional) one.
