whiny drive train

I got A 85 f150 4wd 4spd I6 $800 did the duraspark II conversion it runs good also put new window rubbers on it. The drive train seems to make some whiny noise not sure what trany is in it 1st gear is the worst, seems to do it in or out of 4wd . Trany shifts ok "no sync 1st gear" is this normal for this truck?. It has ether 149k or 249k on it . P/O said the gas gauge floats around don't trust it Needs shocks Other than that it's a good truck.
Any suggestions Thanks

Granny gear is kinda like that, it isn't as quiet as an automatic. I would check and make sure the tranny has sufficient fluid to operate, if it is running low, that could make it noisier.

That 'whine' is pretty common... and is often the result of worn or dry U-joints, or carrier bearing on split shafts. The hollow drive shafts 'ring' with the vibration and cause the whining sound. If the fluid level in the tranny is good, grease the U-joints. If yours don't have fittings I'd go ahead and replace them with ones that do. Worn transmission or drive axle parts can of course cause the noise also, but the 4 speeds are an overkill in these pick-ups and will keep going even if they are noisy. Part of having a 25 year old truck.

The pinion Bearing in the 9-inch rearends can get water in them, causing pits from rust that howel when rotating. ive replaced one in a 72 van and its pretty much the same in any 9-inch rear end, otherwise as i have whitnesed in my brothers 78, the throwout bearing in the fourspeeds, if worn or improperly installed can make a great deal of howeling noise.

im assuming you have a np435, thats what mine had in it before i did the zf swap. mine was noisy no matter what. and have no fear, 1st gear is not syncro'd in either the np435 or the BW t-18. i couldnt find anything wrong with the drivetrain, just a noisy tranny. i had over 300,000 on mine before i pulled it, and there was still nothing wrong with it.
