What's your timing set at?
On all EFI, 10°BTDC. On carbs, factory spec was 6-8°, but you're better off using a vacuum gauge on hi-mileage engines.

What's your timing set at?
I'd try 10-12 BTDC for the best mileage at mainly highway speeds. And I've found factory specs that show some carbed 300's had a base timing of 10-12 from the early 80's.
