If you were to read Ca. vehicle code book cover to cover you basically could make the statment that anything after market on or done to your vehicle is illegal. Unless its CARB approved.

I believe that "CS" refers to poultry excrement.

I hope I'm wrong, but I suspect that fighting it will cost more than paying the ticket. The system is rigged and this is nothing more than a legal shakedown.

I was a cop for over 30 years. Muffler tickets in this part of the country are either CS tickets or attitude tickets. In this area the tickets are considered defective equipment tickets and do not go on your driving record. Generally you will be ordered to correct the violation.

I gotta ZF6, with no cat. Did have a muffler though. Straight piped mine, and unless yuor into the turbo, doesnt sound loud at all, to me, though i do get outta the go pedal when seeing/passing the coppers.

Question Timmyboy: Did you notice any additional noise over stock in the cab itself? I don't care about increased noise at the tailpipe but was wanting to test drive a straight piped truck before installing a 4 inch staight pipe down the road.

not at all, homeboy. What i mean about, hearing it, being "in the pedal", is nothing more, than the whistle, contributed to the intake and W.W. wheel, at higher rpms, other than that, with her moving, cant tell the difference. Think the only difference, is at idle, with exhaust blowing to ground, somewhat gives an echo effect, but no noticable difference, from inside the cab.

If i did it over again, i'd "cut" the muffler out, and install a straight pipe there, with 2-exhaust u-bolt clamps, and leave the rest of pipe run'n out the back. So, for when time to smog, just unbolt, drop it out, and install muffler.

You bought your truck brand new?

If yes, yours would be an anomaly, according to my understanding of how Ford spec'd the trucks out.

My wife's truck is straight piped and I can definitely hear a difference. It's a bit annoying on the highway but doesn't sound bad when just driving around town. I am looking for a muffler to install when I get the time.

Ok, I guess I really need to drive a straight pipe truck before doing it. Sounds like some don't notice much of a difference while others do

i have stacks but even when i had exhaust out the back my truck was not that loud even when i got on it. There was more noise from the whistle of the turbo under the hood then there was out the exhaust.

The exhaust at cruising speed can be a bit loud on stock tires and no stereo. Now with 38s the exhaust noise is the last thing i notice on the highway. Most of the time i hear the exhaust is driving through town and mashing it.

Chet i don't think you can legally change if you had a cat or not. In california you need to have one if your truck came stock from the factory with it. What year is your truck?

My truck is a e99 built 9-98. My neigbors is 99 built 10-2-99. He has a ZF6 trans. no cat sure would be nice to get rid of that cat for towing reasons, keeps the EGT down without it, Chet
