Fuel Gauge

I have a 1994 f150 4x4, 300FI 5 speed man trans. Driving last night my fuel gauge went way past the full mark. I have just under a full tank of gas. Need help! With a 16 +/- gal tank, I need my gauge right. Thanks for the help.

Sounds like a wire opened or the fuel sender resister lost continuity.

Can that happen just driving down the road? Even when I turn the truck off I stays there. When I turn the truck on the needle moves a little.

Not normally but a pegged gauge means high resistance or open circuit from the fuel gauge through the selector switch, wiring, plugs and the fuel sender to ground at the radiator support on the drivers side.

All of the above is with the assumption the gauge is a good one.
