Does anyone have a MPG figure for a 79 F250 crewcab with 460/4.10/31.7" tires? Tac's 2825 @ 65 MPH
This is a stock engine, other than carb. It has an Edelbrock 750 CFM with electric choke. Other than maybe changing carb's, I don't want to get into the engine at this time.
My son took it back to Ft. Bragg (1400 miles) and ran about 8 MPG. I have thought about adding an overdrive unit (not transmission) which would get the axle ratio up around 3.00.
That would give about 2050 RPM @ 65 MPH.
I don't have first hand experience with 70's carb. 460s but from what I hear from those who do, they get less than EFI 460 engines, with the latter getting 11MPG, 12 max. So 9 , 10 mpg seems to be about right. 8 mpg is not way off.

Interesting... how much would this cost? I too get almost 3,000 at 65mph.
I just drove about three hours on the highway and I got 12 mpg. My truck is a '85 f250 with a 460 and i just put a q-jet on it, but i was getting about 11 before the q-jet. No smog stuff either, 3.73 gears and 32" tires cruising at 70-75 mph.
I own a '78 F250. I changed the axle ratio from 3.55 to 4.10 to pull a large trailer and the mileage dropped from 11.5 to 8 mpg so it sounds like your truck is running OK. Based on my experience an overdrive is bound to help, although you can buy an awful lot of gas for the price of an OD!
I've got a 77 F-250 Crew 4x4 with a carb'ed 460. It gets 8mpg. Same gearing, but 33" tires. From my experience, I would say your mileage is about right.
Yeah, my 77 F150 460/C6 3.00 gear gets between 6&8. And I'm only turning 2200rpm@70 mph. That's with a 32" tire. I need about a 3.70 gear for sure! My Windstar turns more rpm than that and it has overdrive!!!!
