I just got a 1978 f-150. It Runs good untill it starts to get to about 200 degrees and then it starts sputtering and if you try to give it gas it it trys to stall, it only does it in gear, It revs up fine in neutral and park. I replaced the thermostat from a 195 to a 180 and it still runs at about 210. Does anybody have any idea?? By the way it has a 351m and a C6
It may be a bad head gasket. Is the fan working properly? Are theyre any broken blades? Is the fan shroud intact? Is there any coolant in the engine? Check all these any of these would be a possibility. Good luck!
Check your electronics, distributor module and ignition module.
The thermostat just maintains a minimum operating temperature. It is the balance between coolant flow, radiator, ambient air temp, and engine load, etc that determines operating temperature.
