This is state law...and no, they will not automatically put 2 new tires "where you tell them" to put them if you tell them you wanted them mounted on the front. The back tires first will be checked for tread depth as mentioned and if they meet the requirement, only then, will the new tires be mounted on the front...
This is total bs as is putting new tires on rear only. On my 4 wheel drives I always crisscross front to rear as the rears wear faster when I rotate and I crisscross all 4 as it reverses direction. This helps smooth out torque wear or chop. If I was to buy 2 new tires which I never do as that's why u rotate. If one tire is bad i just replace all 4 as they wont be far behind. If the fronts were junk and the rears were good I would put the new tires on the front and there is never any doughting what I tell them to do. I would fire their buts in a heartbeat and take my 80k+ tire bussiness a year to somebody who cares. They are working for me not nobama and nobama is not paying the bill. The government is ignorant and that's why theirs broke!

HA HA HA your as funny as the other guy with totally incorrect information.
Jesus hope no body listens to that crock of bull you posted.
One other thing, with bias ply tires, yes you used to crisscross them when rotating, but never ever crisscross radial tires, lol, everyone knows that.
Back right rear to front right and back left to front left.
Not going off on a tangent about rotating tires that's a whole other issue.
"When a vehicle encounters a loss of traction scenario on the rear wheels, the driver cannot compensate, effectively. This is called Oversteer, or "Fishtailing", and is not easily recoverable by the average driver.
Therefore, the tires with the "best" tread should be mounted on the rear axle, to avoid possible life-threatening vehicle control problems Source(s):

Listen people I did my homework on this topic and cannot believe how many misinformed car owners are out there...they simply just don't know and assume the wrong thing....
When you put 4 new tires which tire wears out the most, front right tire. I live in southern California so snow is never a concern. The back tires in a FWD see no loss if little in tread loss. The front right sees the most & than the left front. So it would make sense to put the new one's in the front & the 2 remaining good ones in the back where no loss of tread of little is experienced. Being your in Southern California. Anywhere else is uncivilized. As for snow we no need no stinking snow. Heats always around me so I guess it keeps all snow at bay. Besides when do you see a man with a lighter shade of brown in the snow, NEVER! You guys & your yellow snow!
