erratic downshift
i have a 96 7.3 4x4 chipped 80hp over stock, straight pipes and air induction
130,000 miles
every once in awhile I get an erratic downshift from over drive down 1 gear. rpms might jump 250 to 500. I usually take my foot of the pedal....if I don't it usually goes away within a few seconds.
truck is usually hooked to a 3 horse gooseneck trailer but had to run an errand an hour away yesterday and it happened again.
tranny temps are normal 150
I am not stomping on it and it is not a function of climbing a hill or a change in load
any thoughts??
1 bad overdrive button
2 wiring for the overdrive button wears on the steering column under the cover causing this.
3 lock up clutch in the torque converter is dying
4 4th gear starting to slip
5 In my case, it was hunting in and out of over drive, everytime it shifted into drive the overdrive light would turn on, on its own shifted back into overdrive and the light goes out. some time it would do it once in 10 minutes or 20 times in 1 minute. The problem ended up being a bad ECM, replaced it and truck ran good after.
As I said it is rally erratic. Hauled a horse to VA and back 12 hours each way and would randomly occur, then again not for hours.
appreciate the help ya all.
