my oil pressure gauge is reading quite low, just above min levels, but there is plenty of oil in the truck, is there a way to check if my oil gauge is working correctly or to tell is something else is acting up
If you actually have low pressure, you'll hear the lifters rattling and probably the pistons slapping or the rod bearings knocking. Get a cheap mechanical oil gauge - the factory ones are notoriously freaky and unreliable. You can install it temporarily just to see what the actual pressure is, and then decide what to do with the factory one. You may just need a new switch, but with a few minor mods, you can convert to a true sender.
yah that what i've been thinking cause its not making any of the noises you've said and the previous owner as had problems with it in the past, so i'm hoping its just the guage or switch
could be bad insulation on the wire. the sender is a ground resistance switch, so if the wire's isulation is losing integrity it will show a low reading.
The "gauge" in your truck isnt a real oil pressure gauge. It is more like an idiot light with a needle. As long as there is a any oil pressure it should always read about the same. Ford actually came up with a resistor to put in line with the sender wire to make the gauge read higher because people complained about it.
Like Steve said, a mechanical gauge would be best
Don't fret my friend my 92 5.8 suffers from the gauge issue. I have high miles...do you? Any way as long as you don't hear noise you should be all set. I also have been told that FORDS have low oil pressure by nature...they probably drive a chevy anyway!
I also added dura lube to a recent oil change to coat everything up nice.
Since I plow a lot my truck is always running. I have seen my gauge dive pretty low! Lots of luck!

i got about 103000 km on it, its seems to work some times and not others, i pretty sure its jsut the stupid needle, but i'm gonna get a mechanical gauge jsut to be safe
unscrew the oil pressure sender and install a remote oil pressure gauge. It should read between 30 and 50 p.s.i. if it does note the position of the needle when sending unit is hooked up and go from there.
Maybe replace the sender as they do over time loss there ability to read correctly.
NO KNOCKING, NO RATTLING, LOTS OF OIL IN CRANKCASE----NO PROBLEM.
