I have a 1956 f100 with a 302 from a 1984 f150. I have already done the swap to a toyota power steering box. But the power steering pump is growling really loud i have replaced the pump three times now and i really need some advice. Any and all ideas would be appreciated.
i had power steering fluid in their. called up the people at mid fifty's who said i should run transmission fluid in it instead. changed it and nothing...called back and they refereed me to this website
Check to ensure you aren't overfilled I recently replaced a pump w/toyota box that was leaking and made the growling noise also; I took some of the fluid out, ran it until it was hot and checked fluid level. It's been turning great and the noise has stoped. I brought a remanufactured pump from Auto Zone.

I really don't know where the automatic transmission fluid being put into the power steering got started, but it is not a good thing. If you read the label on the powers steering fluid container, you will see that it is petroleum based, the same as oil. If you wish to try changing what you put in your power steering box, make it straight 30w oil. I would recomend that you flush your system out to get all the tranny fluid out and start over with the oil, then add "Lucas power steeing fluid fix".
checked the levels multiple times but it won't hurt to check again what type of pump are you using. I've got a stock ford from a 30 2 that I got remaned from napa
When you say "Changed the pump three times" do you mean this is the third pump or do you mean this is the third time you have installed the same pump?
If this is the third pump the odds of you getting three bad pumps with the same issues is almost incalculable. So you need to look elsewhere for the cause.
If you have reinstalled the same pump three times then you need to rethink that.
Good luck

What pump are you using? The '84's Ford pump? Those all growled, not terribly but noticeably. It was a design problem with the reservoir, they changed it in the '90's and no more noise. You can also try turning the steering wheel slowly lock-to-lock a couple times to make sure there's no air in the system.
Use what was spec'd in the '84, which was Type F ATF.
in manual it also said to put automatic trans fluid in...yes its the third pump from napa and that is why im trying to find other probs. have already tried getting air out with a vacum pump and turning the wheel.

Ok
Lets think about this a sec.
The odds of you buying three bad pump that act exactly the same are not very good.
I would look at the return and pressure lines for a restriction from the ford specs when you adapted to the Toyota pump. I would think if your pump is putting out more pressure than your hose can transfer or the steering box can accept then you would get some noise from the pump bypassing the excess pressure.
I could be totally wrong ,just working from a common sense view point. I realize some of the older pumps had some noise but they would not howling bad or overly loud.
When they were new, people lived with them, so that indicated they were not too loud.
I would look for some other issue before filling the pump full of any additive.
Opinions will vary

Did you get a used or reman. toy box; you may have a bad steering box. I doubt if you can used the same one I have I used a pump from a 70 mustang which has the V-belts. Here is the part # fromO'Riely's auto parts Cardone - Power Steering Pump Part Number: 20-6167. Make sure your hoses are not clogged or block as mentioned above.
Most people use a Saginaw (GM) pump with the Toy box, as I recall. You need to match pump pressure with what the Toy box was designed for. I think Larry is right, odds are against three bad pumps in a row.
