'74 leaks fuel

Ok, my '74 has a little bit of a problem with the gas tank. It has a single rear mounted 19 gallon tank. Being a '74 styleside it does not have a fuel door, just a cap that sits more or less flush with the side of the bed. I have three problems:

1. I can't fuel the truck at full speed for most pumps. If I try to the gas will not enter the tank fast enough and will splash back. This makes fueling a lengthy affair because I have to stand there and hold the pump at about half way or less should I want the gas to actually make it into the tank. I have been told that there is a vent hose as well as the main filler hose and possibly this vent hose is clogged up causing the problem.

2. The filler hose apparently leaks somewhere. I know when my truck is "full" when gas starts spilling out on the ground. That's right, before the pump will shut itself off, gas starts leaking from somewhere underneath, right behind the rear tire. Gas will continue to slosh out of here until the level in the tank gets low enough.

3. The gas cap will leak. Usually right after I fill up the truck, but sometimes well after the level has gotten low enough to to stop sloshing out as illustrated in point 2, gas will actually spill out from around the gas cap and run down the side of the bed there.

As expensive as gas is, this SUCKS. Not to mention what it is doing to my paint and my asphalt driveway. The truck gets so poor mileage that just putting 5 bucks in at a time isn't really feasible either.

I can buy the replacement filler and vent hoses so I'm sure that will help some. I was thinking about a new gas cap as well to solve that problem. I was curious though if anybody else has had this problem and what you have done to solve it? I might find that the truck doesn't get quite as bad mileage as I think if I can keep the gas in the tank!

1. Its normal we are not in the 70's anymore the long style nozzles are gone thanks to EPA rules unless you live in a state like Idaho where those are still common.

2.Get a new hose from one of the sponsors here or get it from LMC they have it for sure!

3. Get a new gas cap they are cheap!

pull the tank and put a new gasket on the sending unit then look at your hoses to see if any are pinched

Even on my '79, with the "modern" fuel filler neck that came out after unleaded gas, my truck mysteriously developed a filling problem. It literally showed up out of nowhere. Neither the filler hose nor the vent hose appeared to be collapsed. However, I pulled the tank and replaced both hoses, and it solved the problem about 90%. It still did it every once in a while, however, and I was advised to tape the hoses together as was done in the factory setup (for '79 at least) and this solved the problem.

These trucks are somewhat known for having filling issues, and I'm sure that having the filler and vent hose go in between the frame and bed has something to do with it (doesn't seem like the best idea). I'd try replacing these hoses, and you might as well add a new sending unit O-ring while the tank is out.

Yeah I want to see if I can clean out the tank while I'm into it. When I first took the carb apart it had rust flakes in the bowl. I cranked the engine with the fuel line turned up into a jug and I got rust flakes in the jug. I put a new filter on it and the rust flakes stopped, but all that's gonna do is clog up a filter. I'm not sure if the rust is coming from the lines or the tank, but I'm certainly gonna clean out the tank while I've got it out.

Again though it boils down to having the money to do it.
